Meet Maclura our Blackbird fledgling. He is still quite young so we are feeding him every hour and he is still on a heat pad to make sure
he keeps at a constant temperature. Initially, we were worried he wasn't using his legs properly. We see this a lot in fledglings and the outcome isn't a happy one.
However, after giving him a chance to see if it was something that would correct itself, he has done very well! He can now stand on his own and walks slightly too.
We are sure he will continue to thrive in our care and can even be released with our other fledglings once he is a bit older.
Maclura has now been released! He spent a few weeks in our small outside aviary, with a few other fledglings of the same age, for a few weeks. We then opened the doors so they could come and go for the next few days before they were completely on their own. We still see them hanging around the feeders but we are sure they will start to branch out and we will see them less and less.
