Dormouse: Derek & Friends

This tiny little boy was found in the plastic wrapping of some patio slabs, very cold and very wet! Unfortunately, the slabs had

travelled a long way and so we are unsure of where this young Dormouse was trapped. Derek is now eating well and sleeping a lot! In a few weeks he can join our other Dormice and then eventually be released with them back to the wild. They are so, so, so cute when they are sleeping!

The 'others' consist of a mum and her 7 babies! Very, very cute! They have come into us to be overwintered because she had such a late litter and we were concerned about their weight and if they were big enough to survive the winter on their own.

It is important the Dormice are fully fit and toned for their acrobatic life high in the trees this summer. They hibernate deep in the leaves on the floor for over half of the year.

Our rather cute Dormice all headed for freedom last week as they were returned to a release site complete with their little homes. They have been spotted since and early indications are they are doing just fine. Here's a rather chubby "Priscilla" before she had her spring exercise in the pre release runs.
