Swift: Lucky

Here is little Lucky! She was found on the floor with no nest - or mum - in sight! She is much, much smaller than a swift of this age should be

and is definitely not ready to make the long journey back to South Africa just yet. We will be monitoring her closely to make sure she grows and strengthens as quickly as possible! She is not feeding herself properly yet so we are handing feeding round to clock to get her weight up.

We have all our fingers crossed that she will start to put weight on quickly so we can release her ASAP. She needs to go in the next month or she will miss all her family and friends making the long trip - we refuse to let that happen!

We did it!! Lucky took a while but started to put on weight. She was a little late in her release, but thanks to the strange weather there were many groups of Swifts still located here. We were able to find a group fairly local to us and whipped her down there to see if she would fly. She didn't disappoint and went off straight away to join the group. We hope she has a good journey home!
