Veterinary Intern
Job Type: Fixed Term Contract – 6 months/1 year
Hours: 8 hrs/day 6 days/week Monday – Saturday. Early/late shift pattern
Location: Windlesham, Surrey
We are looking for an individual to join our team as a Veterinary Intern.
Who we are:
Harper Asprey Wildlife Rescue is a registered wildlife charity that works 24/7, 365 days a year. We rescue, rehabilitate and release native wildlife – from tiny dormice to the majestic deer and everything in between. We run a full operational facility including a veterinary practice and rehabilitation pens/areas for all British wildlife. We have a small team of permanent staff and a large team of volunteers.
The role:
The Veterinary Intern will support the veterinary staff in the provision of medical services. This includes support for clinical services, contributing to the collection of clinical data and maintaining records.
As a Veterinary Intern, you will:
• Provide a range of veterinary services within your remit including: examination and triage, diagnostics, stabilisation, surgery, medicine, parasitology, radiography, euthanasia and post mortem examination
• Promote programmes for veterinary healthcare and disease control
• Ensure instruments, equipment and supplies are maintained, prepared for use and stocked.
• Assist with setting up for and cleaning up after procedures.
• Assisting with patient handling; coordination of patient throughput; sample collection/analysis and handling
• Setting up and maintenance of intravenous lines; induction and monitoring of anaesthesia
• Care of in-patients, including those undergoing critical care
• Assisting with administrative tasks associated with patient care; admitting and discharging patients; communicating with referring veterinary practices
• Maintain up-to-date and accurate patient medical records
• Adhere to the practice’s current clinical, operational, safety and commercial policies
Experience, knowledge and skills:
• Previous experience working with wildlife advantageous but not essential
• Some experience doing post-mortem examinations and writing up reports preferred
• General knowledge of the principles and practices of veterinary medicine as acquired through a regular course of study
• General knowledge of pertinent laws and regulations
• Ability to identify selected animal normal and abnormal conditions based upon physical examination
• Ability to learn and perform tissue/serum sample collections.
• Ability to use current technology in the performance of the assigned duties including laptop computers, database programs, digital cameras, etc.
• Full driving licence and access to a vehicle as we are not on a public transport route

Working Conditions:
Due to the nature of the work, along with location of the cages and pens – the role requires reaching, squatting, kneeling, bending and stretching. The role also required lifting and carrying. You may be working alone at times and will be required to work quietly so you don’t disturb the wildlife.
