We are looking for individual/s to join our team as a voluntary Veterinary Surgeon.
Who we are:
Harper Asprey Wildlife Rescue is a registered wildlife charity that works 24/7, 365 days a year. We rescue, rehabilitate and release native wildlife – from tiny dormice to the majestic deer and everything in between. We run a full operational facility including a veterinary practice and rehabilitation pens/areas for all British wildlife. We have a small team of permanent staff and a large team of volunteers.
The role:
The volunteer Veterinary Surgeon will diagnose, treat and rehabilitate sick and injured wildlife. This includes providing day to day medical care for the wildlife in the rescue, preventing communicable diseases and maintaining veterinary records.
As a Veterinary Surgeon, you will:
• Clinically assess wildlife on admission, format care plans and complete relevant paperwork.
• Sedate animals for procedures, perform exams and diagnostic tests, take x-rays and ultrasounds.
• Give vaccinations, take blood and faecal samples.
• Prepare wildlife for surgery and perform surgeries, monitoring anaesthesia.
• Provide care to ICU patients, including patient monitoring.
• Administer treatments and medications, including injections, tablets and fluids
• Implant microchips and complete microchip records.
• Prepare and provide food and water for wildlife. Monitor wildlife eating and weight, recording accurately on patients’ casualty sheet.
• Carry out checks on wildlife and report any abnormalities.
• Maintain records, registers and statistics as required.
• Ensure supply levels are maintained. Ensure feed boxes and supplies are topped up.
• Maintain Practice hygiene standards, disinfecting and cleaning surfaces, cages and sterilising surgical equipment.
• Support the Soft Release Program.
• Promote programmes for veterinary healthcare and disease control.
• Manage and develop the skills of a Veterinary Intern.
• Adhere to the practice’s current clinical, operational, safety and commercial policies.
• Complete a handover for the staff member working the next shift.
Experience, knowledge and skills:
• Experience managing a Veterinary Intern preferred but not essential
• 1 year clinical experience in practice required
• Experience working with wildlife desirable but not essential
• General knowledge of pertinent laws and regulations
• Full driving licence and access to vehicle as we are not on a public transport route
• Registered with RCVS

Working Conditions:
Due to the nature of the work, along with location of the cages and pens – the role requires reaching, squatting, kneeling, bending and stretching. The role also required lifting and carrying.
